Welcome to the SPPS Racial Equity Site

In 2011, Saint Paul Public Schools began Racial Equity work in collaboration with the facilitators of Pacific Educational Group based on "Courageous Conversations About Race" (Singleton & Linton, 2006).

According to Singleton and Linton, "Educational Equity is raising the achievement of all students while

  • narrowing the gaps between the highest- and lowest- performing students; and
  • eliminating the racial predictability and disproportionality of which student groups occupy the highest and lowest achievement categories."

Three critical factors have been identified for schools to close the racial achievement gap:  passion, practice and persistence.

Past Efforts

During the 2009-2010 school year, Saint Paul Public Schools' staff attended cultural proficiency training. All staff completed the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and completed the first 3 hours of IDI training. Furthermore, over 77% of SPPS staff completed nine additional hours of cultural proficiency training based on the IDI model.
